My World - October 2010
Now, where was I, oh yeah, talking about how quiet things are. I have also noticed that most of the Forums I lurk on are way off as well. The Internet Woodworking Community
is quieter than I have ever seen it. Look's like the biggest discussion going on is about Tommy MacDonald's new show on PBS which is now airing in some locations and fixin' to in a lot
more places.
Tommy is a friend and I do wish him well. I spoke with him just before the premier airing of the show and he was 'a little' nervous over how the show would be perceived. I told him that some would 'eat his lunch' and others would 'love it' but all he could control is what he did and that he just had to do his best and let it ride. I told him that public opinion is always hard and that he has some pretty big shoes to fill so their will be some comparison and perhaps even some jealousy. There will also be personal attacks and every 'opinion' you can and cannot think of. If there is one lesson I have learned in the past three years it is that you CANNOT please all of the people all of the time, so don't try. It will be tough in the beginning but it will get better as folks get used to you.
When Roy and Norm hit television, there wasn't anything to compare them to. In just our small corner of the internet, we have seen the best in folks and the worst. Many will expect more than is possible, especially since it is free, it's just how it is....LIFE!
From a personal perspective, I can't fathom trying to get good content into 20 or 30 minutes. I know the amount of time and work it takes us to do what we do, can't imagine what it would be like for television. I hope folks will give 'Rough Cut with Tommy Mac' a chance and don't be too quick to judge, or point fingers. Best wishes to Tommy!
